It was created in the 1983, inspired by and drawing on material from a traditional Hmong folk song (kwv txhiaj) that he encountered during a recording trip to collect Hmong folk songs for broadcast on a local radio station. The song tells the story of the deep emotions of a talented young man and a beautiful young woman who cannot be together because each had been promised in marriage before they met. It also truthfully reflects the long-standing belief of “parents decide, children obey.” The melody is likely closely associated with the childhood memories of many people from the 9x generation and Gen Z, and I myself am no exception. For that reason, I chose to create a new arrangement for this song and added a reflective rap verse to explore more deeply the original composer’s story.
